BET AWARDS: TRIBUTE

The 2015 BET Awards seems to be looking great! The writers are on point with their catchy jokes and the stars are doing their part in making everything come together nicely. We could live a lifetime off the fashions showcased tonight, but something even more phenomenal than the shopping trends are the amazing tributes.

The first tribute was to the gospel icon, Andrae Crouch. Donnie Mcclurkin headed the tribute with an amazing rendition an Andrae Crouch hit. The gospel legend passed away in January. Crouch wrote and rearranged some of the most memorable songs of 20th and 21st century including “Let the Church Say Amen.”

When Bad Boy artists Puff Daddy aka Diddy and Mase hit the stage for a reunion, many knew that a Biggie tribute would be soon to follow. Faith Evans, the widow of Christopher Wallace (Biggie) also hit the stage as one of the many artists Sean Combs (Diddy) managed as well as Lil Kim. The tribute featured a slowed down tempo along with Biggie’s lyrics to “Mo Money Mo Problems.” With all that Didddy bopping, the bad boy seemed to slip a little trying to get his groove on. Hmm…maybe it was karma from his recent arrest or maybe Puff Daddy is getting a little rusty, who knows?

As if the heartfelt night of tributes couldn’t get any better, the tribute to Smokey Robins, the lifetime achievement award recipient was astonishing! Tori Kelly, Robin Thicke, and Ne-Yo took to the stage to pay homage to the veteran songwriter and singer. Smokey, who looks good and sounds as sweet as wine gave a remarkable acceptance speech and performance following the tribute.

Other tributes included a presentation about Stuart Scott, ESPN commentator from his friend and colleague from Kenny Smith. BET also did a tribute to Percy Sledge, Ben E. King and B.B. King, performers who all passed away this year.
