Call Her SEXY, Call Him SMART

Jon Stewart made some pretty valid points about the attention Caitlyn Jenner has been getting for her Vanity Fair cover. During Monday’s episode, Stewart commended Caitlyn Jenner’s bravery for coming into this world. He went on to joke about how the media wasted no time in treating Caitlyn like a woman, focusing solely on her looks. To prove his point, he played a few clips of journalists only making comments about her appearance. Instead of keying in on the bigger picture, they used adjectives such as hot, sexy, and glamorous. Jon went on to say, “You see, Caitlyn, when you were a man, we could talk about your athleticism, your business acumen...But now you’re a woman, which means your looks are really the only thing we care about.” Ouch!

Even though Jon’s comments are something to chuckle about, this topic is something people need take into consideration. Bruce Jenner’s transition to Caitlyn is a historical landmark in American culture. But everyone only seems to be paying attention to her “Sexy” new look. Here are a couple of tweets that were made moments after Caitlyn made her debut.

Media sexism is nothing new under the sun. Even the most powerful women have to deal with it. Who can forget about the time Regis grabbed Nicki’s booty on Live With Regis and Kelly? After performing one of her hit singles, “Right Thru Me,” Regis was too focused on her mesmerizing body to remember the lyrics she just finished singing. Because he’s a man, and she’s a woman, it was considered a funny moment. But what if it was the other way around? How would men feel if their package was grabbed on live television without warning?

Yes, Caitlyn Jenner is finally “Free.” But this certainly does not excuse her from being treated like a woman in America. Let’s hope she is ready to face this type of reality.
