“And the Nominees Are In”, 2019 Oscars
History is being made, once again. This year’s Oscar nominees have been announced and there are a lot of first-timers.
Action and comical movies have seemed to take over the categories. Black Panther is the first superhero film/comic book nominated for Best Picture. With 8 nominations, ‘The Dark Knight’ is the only comic book/superhero movie with more nominations than Black Panther, which had 7.
There is also a lot of overdue first-time nominations, with Spike Lee, Regina King, Sam Elliott, just to name a few.
Just as in 2009, there are no women directors nominated in 2019. In all of the award’s 91 years, there have only been 4. ROMA’s producer, Gabriela Rodriguez, is the First Hispanic woman to ever receive a Best Picture nom. ROMA star, Yalitza Aparicio, is the First Indigenous woman nominated for Best Actress. ROMA is also the first Netflix film nominated for Best Picture.
Hannah Beachler becomes the First African American ever nominated for Best Production Design, where she worked on Black Panther.
Although history is continuing to be made, there is still no host scheduled.
Be sure to catch the 2019 Oscars, Sun., Feb. 24th at 8 EST on ABC.
