The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards: Slay and Nays of The Red Carpet

D'Airah Pridgett

Aside from the anticipation of who’s winning your favorite categories, the outfits of the evening are just as exciting to see unfold on the red carpet. From Gucci glam to “loungey” looks, here is a list of our top slays and nays of the evening:

  1. Billy Porter: SLAY

Billy Porter shined on the red carpet in a bedazzled remote-controlled veil paired with a bright blue disco jumpsuit by Baja East. He was covered this evening in a whopping 70,000 crystals, making it almost impossible to miss his shiny entrance (as if his personality wouldn’t have done that for itself). He was styled by Sam Ratelle and his look was inspired by Billie Eilish’s Burberry bonnet at the AMA’s, Ratelle explained on the carpet. The electronic veil was created because Porter did not want his face covered by the fringe.

  1. Ariana Grande: SLAY

Ariana Grande lavishly draped the red carpet in her custom gray Giambattista Valli Tulle gown matched with a custom pair of Christian Louboutin heels. It’s rumored that her beautiful dress was 20-ft in diameter! She was styled by Law Roach, and although we saw something differing from her iconic two-piece and thigh high boots on the red carpet, she did stay true to that iconic ponytail. Photographers swooned to her as she made her strut; she made love to the camera before she sat with her face resting on her hand. So, Ariana!
  1. Lizzo: SLAY

Lizzo left a trail of ice behind her on the red carpet this evening with an ultra-glam look. She wore an all-white Atelier Versace gown that featured a sexy slit and a crystal lining. To top it off, she slung a white faux fur stole around her arms to add to the already elegant dress she absolutely rocked. She was one of the first to walk the red carpet, and set the bar super high for the celebs to follow after.

  1. Chrissy Teigan: SLAY
Chrissy, as always, brought life and color to the red carpet this night! She wore a bright orange gown with a plunging neck-line by Yanina Couture. She was accompanied by her husband, Grammy winning and nominated artist John Legend who wore a cool grey plain suit by Alexander McQueen.

  1. Gwen Stefani: SLAY

Gwen Stefani took on the red carpet accompanied by her boyfriend, Blake Shelton, in a seashell studded Dolce and Gabbana gown. The short dress was accompanied by a cute pair of thigh high boots. Stefani jokingly said that the inspiration for her dress was brought on by the “Shel” in Blake Shelton’s last name and continued by saying he had been gathering white shells for the piece for years. Shelton who accompanied her wore a basic 3-piece black suit.

  1. Billie Eilish: NAY

We have fallen in love with Billie’s edgy and individualistic style, but did she pull that off on the red carpet? Eilish walked the carpet in a green, Gucci, oversized ensemble custom made for the occasion and her gender-neutral style. She paired it with long green Gucci nails and her iconic green and black hair as well. Not to mention, they were all a different shade of green. We appreciate her staying true to her style, but did she know this was the Grammy’s?

  1. FKA Twigs: NAY

FKA Twigs was photographed in a pink and black hooded gown with a slit that showed a lacey-ish leg that seemed to potentially be a full body suit. From the oversized black hood that reminded viewers of a silk bonnet, to the transparent black tulle that draped the pink silk, she was not included in the hottest looks of the night. The dress was custom made by her close friend Ed Marler, and all I can say is, we can tell.

  1. Liza Koshy: NAY
Liza was spotted on the red carpet in a zebra-esque party dress at the Grammy’s. She didn’t know the designer, but she joked that at the Grammy’s she was, “Li-za with the ze-bra” and said she’s working to find out who to credit for the creation of the dress and promised to tag the designer in her Instagram post. I think we’re all awaiting who it is, so we can gain some clarity on where he got his inspiration for this dress.

  1. Yola: NAY
The country-soul artist, Yola, was spotted on the red carpet in a bright pink fringe covered Christian Siriano gown. The reporters on the carpet felt the disco vibes coming through but Yola said her inspiration was Dolly Parton. She wore her hair big and bold and accessorized it with some glam clips, one being an outline of a guitar. We love the confidence, but I think we could have left the fringe at home. I don’t think anyone could do this dress the right way.
