Dwyane Wade, one of the most iconic faces in the NBA, retired last year to take on the job of being a full-time father. The story is simply that Wade’s daughter Zaya, (who was known as Zion at the time) came home and spoke with both Wade and Union on the topic of changing the way she should be addressed. “‘I think going forward, and I’m ready to live my truth,’” Wade recalls. Wade spoke on The Ellen Show stating, “It’s our jobs as parents to give the best feedback that we can, and that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it.”
Accepting the fact that their son was now a part of the LGBTQ+ community was no problem for Wade and Union as they have consistently emphasized the fact that they are the type of parents who listen to their children as well as do everything for the betterment of their child. The real work seemed to be reaching out to friends and family to ensure the situation was fully understood by any relationship the family has contact with. “We just tried to figure out as much information as we can to make sure we give our child the best opportunity to be her best self.” Wade stated.
The couple took to social media recently, primarily twitter, to give the opportunity for others to meet their daughter. Both parents showed their overwhelming support for the LGBTQ+ community and stated that they were allies of the LGBTQ+ community.
“What every parent should be is what you’re being now - which is unconditionally loving your child and supporting your child in whoever they are.” DeGeneres stated.
